Doctor In The House!

Sunday, dawn, 13:30, (I'm a musician, this is dawn!)
Eldest wakes me, "Coffee?"

"Huegha"

"Coffee then!"

Typical Sunday 'morning' for me, 'cept Eldest is over excited.
She just got her schedule for medical college.
And can't wait to tell me all about it.
And bleary-eyed as I am, even though it was my turn to drive the BandWagon last night, and hence was sober on returning home, (but it was still a late night!)
I can still see,
She's like a lottery winner!
(And in a way she is!)

Our baby is going to Medical School!!!!

It's one Sunday less at home,
One Sunday closer to college,
One Sunday closer to being a doctor!

Me? I came from what could only be described as the slums of Limerick.
Mrs. Map though, she came from what could only be described as 'almost' the slums of limerick. (She married below her station!)
And here we are, our first born going off to one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country.

We are so proud. (D'uh!)
And so is she, for she knows her history, and from whence she came.
She never knew her Grand Daddies, or they her, but both of her Nana's hearts are swelled to bursting!
And her sisters are proud as punch.

Big changes for all in the Map house.

I'm not trying to take credit, but when a couple of kids from the 'wrong side' dig their way out, meet, fall in love , marry, have mega brainy kids and try to make the next generation better?

(Movie out soon!)

  4. Mr Mapstew, more flavour has come from a dirty glass than all the polished crystal in the western world. And what good is the company of friends if a man cannot shed an odd tear of pride for that of a young colleen?

Br proud, be free, be a father.

  5. You have every right to be proud and happy. When my # 1 son got his degree it seemed like the happiest day of my life with the reassurance that - thank God - one had done something right. It's not necessarily academic prowess as the feeling they are on the right track.

  7. Stew, you have done your best with your circumstances but it is more satisfying to see your children attempt to do the same.
My ex wife's daughter would not try at school and I kept telling her she would end up as a checkout chick at the local supermarket---after 5 years of unemployment she phoned me one day to tell me that I would get a good laugh, she had just got a job as a checkout chick-----I didn't laugh--I just told her to be the best checkout chick that she could be.
You should be proud of your children as long as they try to do their best.
    You got a good one

  8. Where do you get this lottery nonsense? She worked her ass off for that schedule. Nothing to do with luck at all. Do you suppose she feels the weight of family expectations? Hope not. It'll be hard enough without that.

  15. Belfast; Ta pal. I'm hoping to get Vin Diesel to play the part of me. It should be epic, with a cast of thousands! :¬)

Warden; Thank you sir. And for the sage advise also, I will try to stay proud and free, and will always be a faither! ;¬)

  16. Pat; Thank you. 'On the right path', that's exactly how we feel, she's off to do something she has been wanting to do for many years now. She is a happy lass. :¬)

  17. Clyde; That's all we've ever told them, to do thier best, whatever the task is. They are happy kids. :¬)

UB; My lottery analogy was meant to convey the sheer joy and 'Is this really happening to me?' she is feeling right now, like someone who has come into a lot of money suddenly.
The only expectations her Ma & I have ever had is that all our kids do things they WANT to do, and to be happy. We have never even put pressure on them to study, they just love absorbing information. Maybe we're just freaks! :¬)

  21. The two of you have every right to be PROUD and to TAKE SOME OF THE CREDIT! Yes, your lovely lass is smart, but it takes loving, nurturing parents to turn those braincells into something special. After all, she did pick a field to help people.

Congrats to ALL of you! xx

  24. What everyone else already said. But also, that girl of yours is going to be a better doctor because she wasn't born with a silver spoon firmly wedged in her mouth. Trust me, I know of what I speak. The best doctors I ever encountered in my nursey days came from humble stock and weren't ashamed to admit it.

The very best of luck to Kate as she starts her studies, and a huge pat on the back to you and Mrs. Map for allowing her to formulate and follow her own dreams. That's the best gift that any parent can give a child! xxoo

  25. Milady; Thanks, that's very encouraging. I told this to Kate today (we went on a tour of Cork city and the medical school) and it pleased her no end! :¬)
