Jimmy's

'Tis just in from a mid-week wedding I am, unusual here in Ireland, but getting more common since civil ceremonies and same sex partnerships became legal. (We're also available most Tuesdays, Mondays, and other days with 'day' at the end!)

The thing about 'non weekend' weddings is the fact that most people have to get up for work the next day so they tend not to let themselves 'GO', get wild, as it were. Suffice to say it was a good wedding, but not a feckin wild hoolie! Fun was had, people danced, we got paid. (Cash!)

Jimmy, one of my big brothers, was at said wedding. A quiet man, loves dancing, and singing! He is a wonderful tenor, but lacks the confidence of his younger balder brother, who in turn lacks the true talent of the elder!

Soon I will be 50 years old, exactly a week later he turns 60. There are no other kids in between. When I was a wee lad he was my hero. I would wait for him to come home from his job as a messenger boy (for the local butcher), and sit on his lap as he taught me to sing the songs of the day! He was a little bit of a hippie back then (1967 ish) long hair, flared jeans, grandpa shirt. And I wanted to be just like him!

Today we look quite like each other, though he still has more hair. And his wife says that I am Jimmy, but with attitude'!

As I sang tonight, I could see him watching me, and I could see him smiling with pride, and I was hoping he could see that I would not have been up on that stage if it were not for him!

Jimmy. A name that keeps coming up on my journey.
My Da was Jimmy.
Big brother is Jimmy.
My best man at my wedding (and still my drummer) was Jimmy.
And there's the shandy drinkin' ten and a half stone ginger from Glasgow. Another Jimmy!

Four men I am honoured to know!

  2. Oddly enough I don't know anyone close I see on any kind of regular basis called Jimmy. There's a James, and perhaps a Jim or 2, but I can't remember the last time I said "Hi Jimmy" out loud rather than written down.

  3. It's nice to read of siblings who admire each other rather than try to one up the other...or worse. I'm betting it's a mutual admiration society.

Tis a good name. Even when it begins with a K. ;)

  5. There's a Jimmy's bar in my neighborhood, a smallish place with a meat raffle every Thursday.

Mid-week weddings, huh?! Can't say I've been to one yet!

  7. Close family ties are the best, aren't they!?!? Are you the youngest, Map? And yes, Jimmy is a grand name... no matter if one is ginger or not. Coming from a family that is a full 50% ginger (I'm one of the 4 that is not), it makes no never mind to me the colour of a man's (or woman's) hair. ;-) xoxoxo

(Think I'll stay away from the pub for a few days, least 'til he calms down a bit!) :¬)

  9. Hah! Relax, being ginger is not one of my traits, I come from a long line of Glesga men who prefer the clean shaven look, although shandy drinking with Scarls would be a pleasure. If of course the dishwasher wasnae full of dirty glasses.

  17. Map: A meat raffle is exactly that. You buy tickets and later in the evening they do a drew and the winner gets a bunch of packaged raw meat to take home for the family. Can be a very good deal!! They are very common up here as well.

I now have visions of Jimmy shaving... =D

Pon; I know, I was just being naughty! I won a turkey once. Actually, I used to be quite lucky in raffles, back in the early nineties I won 6 T.V.'s in the space of twelve months! :¬)

  19. Your Jimmy sounds a good man to have in your corner.
I'm puzzled about our Jimmy. If he is 7' tall and only weighs 10 and a half stone he must be much slimmer than he appears in my mind's eye.
I'm not even going to think of the ginger bit.

  20. ...oh go on Pat... let's think about Jimmy's ginger bits...

  21. Pat; He's in a right huff! Wouldn't even come to the pub last night!

    Scarlet; NO! :¬)

  22. Holy jaysus, you have me painted as an eejit once again. Pony, I don't shave hen, I polish my dome. Pat, 6ft 7" hen, no need to make me taller, and I weigh in at an even 16 stone. As for Scarls.. she knows that my bits are very far fae ginger. : )

  23. Aw, sweet brotherly love. And look what you've set off here! ;)
(I have two brothers-in-law named Jimmy.)

  24. Jimmy; Pass the polish pal, mine's a bit dull the neet! C'mon, have a pint, let's miss and kake up! (hic!) :¬)

Jayne; Brotherly love, aye, nothing as strong. :¬)

  25. Jimmy sounds quite delicate, like one of those small flowers you get growing in the northern tundra!
