Two completely different songs.
Two completely different artists.
The first was the one that made me want to sing.
The second was the one that made me want to get up on a stage and sing in public.
I know a lot of you will like JT, not so sure about Mr. Numan! :¬)
I would much, MUCH rather go to a Gary Numan concert than a James Taylor concert. I respect Taylor's talent and long career but, Christ, to me, every song sounds exactly the same; a slow drone to sleepyland. I suppose you could say that all Rolling Stones songs sound the same but at least it's a really great song. Not sure how I'd stay awake through a James Taylor show. No such problem at a Numan concert, though.
ReplyDeleteI agree with UB in spite of some members of the audience.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how these wee moments stay with you forever, I am happy they changed you and thanks for sharing. I like them both.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
I played Are Friends Electric over and over again and drove my mum mad with it. The Pleasure Principle got the same treatment. I saw Gary at Chelmsford... it was a festival thingy - Pulp were headlining [1996?] - Gary wasn't quite the same as I remembered, but Sparks were also there and were the same as ever.

Hey, I'll go with James Taylor
ReplyDeleteHe was just in Australia with Carole King
I can understand that he inspired you to perform.
You could do a rewrite on Carolina on my mind
No choosing for me as I love them both.

Spiffingly wonderful tune by Mr Numan and co, a wonderful memory of listening to this song when my first grandchild was born.
ReplyDeleteUB; I don't actually go to many concerts meself, partly because I'm usually working when someone I like is about, and partly because most of the decent shows don't travel to the sticks and I'm fucked if I'm travelling all the way to Dublin! But these are two I would make an effort for! :¬)
ReplyDeletePat; Always knew you were a rocker! :¬)

Sausage; A man after me own heart. Glad you enjoyed them. :¬)
ReplyDeleteScarlet; I have most of Numan (including Pleasure Principle) on ye olde vinyl. And Tubeway Army. I'm sure I saw Sparks performing on TV recently. :¬)

Clyde; Ah, JT & CK back together. Did you get to see them? :¬)
ReplyDeletePearl; Well then, there's nothing more to be said! :¬)

Warden; Hello and welcome to Map-land and to Blog-land. Any friend of Mr. Numan (and Pat, and Madame DF) is a friend of mine. Drop by any time. (I had a peek at your blog and I think I am going to like you!) :¬)
ReplyDeleteHello Stew! For some reason, I can't view the songs, so will be back, but wanted to say hello!
ReplyDeleteJT is a sentimental favorite...probably because a friend in school use to sing those songs to us before exams in college..calming effect. :)
ReplyDeleteLeah; Hi there! Do come back. :¬)
ReplyDeletexxx
hope; Maybe I should have been listening to JT before exams instead of Gary! :¬)

as a solitary brain floating in space, i have always found "in my mind im gone to Carolina" to be my favourite JT song
ReplyDeleteI'll take Numan and his influence on you to perform. GREAT keyboards, while he does his thang—a worthy "mentor."
ReplyDeleteSerious question: Do you guys wear any make-up (like eye-liner) on stage?
Boltzmann's Brain; Hello and welcome! It's good to have some new brain around! :¬)
ReplyDeleteCharlie; I think Mr. Numan is more popular than I realised, with the folk who visit here anyhow!
I do wear eyeliner, but not on my eyes! (I use it to draw on a moustache for my Freddie Mercury 'Bit'!) :¬(0
Not heard much of Taylor's music to be honest but I saw Numan last year at HMV picture house Edinburgh, I wasn't expecting much but it was actually a good gig. I can see why you drew inspiration from him.
ReplyDeleteRyan; I have yet to see either of these men live, but given the choice, I would opt for Gazza! I love his current sound and what he does with his back catalogue. :¬)
ReplyDeleteahhh.. just my kind of video polarity. James Taylor is such a gentle beautiful thing, then there's Gary.. the intense bloke who married his stalker (I think.. or was that someone else?) anyway.. perfect, both of em :-D
ReplyDeletethe watercats; If you've ever senn Gary being interviewed, he is also a gentle, quite shy person. And yes, he did marry a long time fan (stalker).
ReplyDelete(How's the new fantasy band coming along?) :¬)
